LG Poll: Emergence Of More Female Candidates on PDP Platform

The statement expressed by Sandra Pepera, Director for gender, women, and democracy, emphasized that male and female must work together in order to solve the myriad of problems in their countries.

She added, “In order to meet worldwide development goals and build strong, sustainable democracies, women must be encouraged, empowered and supported in becoming strong political and community leaders.”

The reflection of this statement is however gaining momentum in Akwa Ibom as the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party recently approved names of successful councillorship and chairmanship candidates for the party in the forthcoming local government election.

The endorsed party flag bearers had names of women who are qualified candidates for chairmanship, vice chairmanship and councillorship in the upcoming local government election slated for October 2020.

Meanwhile, there are four female chairmanship candidates ( Nsit Atai, Urue Offong/Oruko, Ibesikpo Asutan and Obot Akara LGAs); more than 17  female vice chairmanship candidates and two or more female councillorship flag bearers in each local government area.

Unfortunately, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area did not include any female candidate due to their chauvinistic belief of women not being strong enough to withstand the political storm in the locality.

Nevertheless, successful women candidates in other local government areas are able to give effective female representation in their different places of assignment when they finally emerge as winners in their respective local governments and wards.

It is of no doubt that the political system in the state will witness certain level of stability as other parties perhaps emulate the same approach when selecting their flag bearers in the forthcoming October electoral processes.

There is a gleam of hope that as more women participate in the state politics, this will help actualize the Completion Agenda of Gov Udom Emmanuel’s Administration, strengthen gender equality and consequently increase policy making that will emphasize quality of life in families, women, men and ethnicity at the grassroots level.
