A’Ibom Govt To Revamp Dilapidated Sports’ Facilities

Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Monday Uko, has said his ministry will renovate sports facilities in the state in order to achieve optimal utilization of such facilities.

Checks by our correspondent had revealed that the West Itam Secondary School Sports Centre has lost its glory to apparent neglect.

Findings also showed that a similar sports complex in Onna Local Government Area is in similar condition.
Fielding questions from our correspondent on phone, the Youth and Sports Commissioner said development of sports remains a priority for the state government.

He said that despite few perceived exceptions, sports facilities in the state are in good shape hence the success by teams representing the state in various sporting competitions.

Uko said a delegation from his ministry led by the permanent secretary is on the verge of touring sports facilities to ascertain action needed to be taken to put things right.

“A team from the ministry led by the permanent secretary will soon look at those facilities. Yes, every facility needs maintenance. The COVID-19 pandemic has really affected sports in the country in the past four months or so. At the appropriate time, those facilities would be repaired, I can assure you”, he promised.

The commissioner however called on investors to help government develop sports in the state.
