Akwa United Have Become A Factor In Nigerian, African Football – Paul Bassey
With the 2019/2020 football season set to reopen soon, Akwa United have been listed as one of the teams to create impact in the Nigerian Professional Football League and ultimately on the African continent.
The club’s chairman, Elder Paul Bassey, said in an exclusive interview, that the team are all set to conquer Nigeria and Africa.
He said already, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has rated Akwa United as one of thej four best teams in Nigeria only behind Enugu Rangers, Enyimba of Aba and Kano Pillars.
Elder Bassey who is a renowned publisher, editor and CAF instructor said the fact that Akwa United now have five players in the national camp is an indication that the team are a factor in Nigerian football.
He noted that in the last five years Akwa Ibom have been consistently among the top four in Nigeria.
The chairman used the opportunity to once again thank the Governor Udom Emmanuel Administration for the massive support and funding that have brought success to the team.
He said running a football club is very capital intensive and expressed dismay that the private sector in Nigeria has done little or nothing in sports sponsorship. He said were it not for government many clubs would have gone under.
The support base for Akwa United, he said, is fast growing and that the club will build on the goodwill to win the league and go for the African Champions League.
Akwa United, he said, are all out to win the league this season, having already won the Aiteo Cup ( FA Cup) twice in 2015 and 2017.
Elder Bassey said with Akwa Ibom State now having two clubs in the league following the promotion of Akwa Starlets,, more opportunities would now be created for youths of the State.
He thanked Governor Emmanuel for promoting sport development in the State.
