Commissioner of Lands Pledges to Recover All Government Lands As He Resumes Office

The Commissioner of Lands, Captain Iniobong Edward Ekong, has pledged to collaborate with other ministries and staff to reclaim government lands from individuals who are illegally occupying or misusing these properties in contravention of the law.
He made this commitment on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, during a meeting with the ministry’s staff, marking his return to office.
Captain Ekong emphasized the need for a clear agenda and collective monitoring of compliance with land usage regulations to ensure that all Indigenous people of the state comply with the rules.
“Under my watch, we will recover all government lands, regardless of who is involved. I will not yield one inch of government land to fraudsters, speculators, or individuals acting illegally.”
“We need to monitor compliance with land usage regulations, ensuring that every individual adheres to the rules. This means we must consciously and intentionally ensure adequate compliance to prevent our state from becoming a slum under Governor Umo Eno’s administration.”
Ekong highlighted Akwa Ibom’s growing reputation as a destination of choice, citing the desire of tourists and citizens to enjoy the state’s peaceful atmosphere. “As a ministry, we must ensure a comfortable environment for everyone. We will maintain integrity in all our transactions, prioritize staff training, welfare, and motivation, and create platforms for intellectual discussions that challenge our existing structures.”
He stressed the importance of collaboration with other ministries, such as housing, sports, agriculture, and justice, to achieve the ministry’s goals. “Our work is crucial to the stability of other ministries, and we must work together to acquire government lands.”
Early in his speech, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Emmanuel Iton, welcomed the commissioner and lauded his unique qualities, which have enabled him to serve the ministry for the third time.

“We are delighted to have you back, as you are a natural leader and a friend to all. Your return is reminiscent of Moses, who was chosen by God for greatness. We have continued to build on the excellent foundation you laid, and we appreciate the government’s confidence in your abilities. As staff, we believe that you will make significant contributions to advancing the “Arise Agenda” of Umo Eno. We trust that God’s grace will guide you as you undertake this mandate.”
Speaking further, a director in the ministry, Mr. Effiong Akpan, said the members of staff are committed to working with the commissioner to ensure a fruitful tenure in office. “We appreciate your return to the ministry for the third time. We pledge to provide you with all the support you need to succeed because we have witnessed your excellent work in the past and are confident that you will excel again.”
