COVID-19: RSG/UNICEF To Empower 300 Khana Women With Skills

The Rivers State Government in collaboration with UNICEF will soon commence training of underprivileged women heading homes in various skills as a means of empowerment.

Such skills include production of soap, izal, and bleach to enable the women enhance their income.

Speaking during a sensitisation meeting with women in Kaa Community, the UNICEF resource person, Mrs Ineba Tongkam, said the initiative was aimed at empowering 100 women each in three communities of Khana L.G.A.

The initiative is focused on empowering a minimum of 300 poor female headed house holds with skills in soap, izal and bleach production to enable them access additional income,” she said.

According to her, it will also enable the women to implement and maintain their hygienic requirements for Covid-19 prevention, and enhance their resilience in confronting additional suffering that has been brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic”.

She continued that the initiative is at its pilot stage and will be implemented in Kaa, Okwali and Bane communities of Khana L.G.A.

When the team earlier visited the Chairman of the L.G.A, Elder Lahteh Loolo, he assured that the Council will not only support but also protect the project in terms of sustainbility.

He stated that, “the programme is community-based, and as a government what we will do is to interface with the heads of the communities to ensure that they protect this laudable programme”.

On his part, the leader of the Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) delegation, Mr Napoleon Adah, urged the women to take the opportunity accorded them seriously.

“The women should take this opportunity seriously, they should ensure that they come together as a team and see how they can achieve success in this programme,” he said.

In their seperate responses during the meeting, the Royal Highnesses of Kaa and Bane communities, HRH Mene Benjamin L. Kii, Mene Bua Ka-Babbe IV, Kaa Town, and HRH Mene Barille Deebom, Mene Bua Kenwigbara III of Bane, respectively, assured on ensuring that the programme is successful in their communities.
