The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the appointment of Dr Akanimo Jonah as Acting Rector for Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
At a brief handover ceremony on Thursday, the outgoing Rector, Dr Moses Umobong, said he has been directed by the institution’s visitor, Governor Umo Eno, to transfer leadership to the Deputy Rector, Dr Jonah.
“I have been authorised to hand over to the Deputy Rector, Dr Akanimo Jonah. My wish and desire is that we all join hands with him to continue steering the institution pending the appointment of a substantive Rector,” Umobong said.
He also wished his successor well, expressing confidence that he would “hold on well and deliver on the objectives of the institution.”
Responding, Dr Jonah thanked God for what he described as a significant moment in his career.
He pledged loyalty to Governor Umo Eno, noting that the administration’s ARISE Agenda had already begun to reshape the state’s education sector.

He urged staff and students to continue supporting the Governor in advancing reforms aimed at strengthening the polytechnic and improving opportunities for young people.
The new Rector expressed appreciation to his predecessor for what he called seven years of dedicated service marked by discipline, innovation and steady growth. He noted that the polytechnic’s rise to its current standing as one of the top institutions in the country was made possible through the collective effort of staff as well as the support of Governor Umo Eno’s administration.
He appealed to both academic and non-academic staff to work together in unity, stating that the institution was entering a crucial transition period that would require cooperation, patience, and a renewed commitment to academic excellence.
He added that his focus would include improving learning facilities, strengthening discipline, expanding practical training for students, and ensuring that the polytechnic remains competitive and responsive to the state’s needs.
Dr Jonah hails from Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area and earned his Doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
