Info Commissioner Charges Journalists On Ethics, As NUJ Press Week Opens In Uyo

The 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, began on a reflective note, as journalists gathered on Sunday for a thanksgiving service, with a renewed call from the State Government for professionalism, ethical conduct, and responsible journalism.

The service, held at All Grace Household Ministry, IBB Avenue, Uyo, marked the formal commencement of the week-long activities lined up for this year’s Press Week with the theme “Journalism Practice in Akwa Ibom: The Turning Point”.

Commissioner for Information, Mr Aniekan Umanah, who represented Governor Umo Eno, charged media professionals to uphold factual reporting, objectivity and constructive engagement in their work.

He reminded practitioners that the Cybercrime Act remains in force, noting that while the government welcomes criticism, it must be grounded in truth and professionalism.

The Commissioner also highlighted the State Government’s support to the media community and referenced the donation of vehicles to the immediate past NUJ leadership, the completion of NUJ Auditorium and the appointment of journalists into government positions.

In his address, State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Nsibiet John, led the Union in thanksgiving as it marked 37 years of journalism in the State and noted that with 12 leadership cycles completed, his administration represents the 13th, and remains committed to consolidating the gains made over the years.

He emphasised capacity building, welfare and continuous training as core priorities of the current leadership and restated the NUJ’s commitment to working closely with the government in supporting the implementation of Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda.

The Thanksgiving also drew personalities, including Senator Ekong Sampson of Eket Senatorial District; Akparawa Michael Bush of Bush House Nigeria; Hon. Udobia Udo representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency; and Patron, NUJ Zone 6, Mr Churchill Udoh, who donated to the church and pledged support to the union.

Delivering the sermon on the topic“The Turning Point,” Senior Pastor of All Grace Household Ministry, Rev. Ibup Emah, described a turning point as a divinely inspired moment that reshapes destiny, urging journalists to remain spiritually sensitive so as not to miss such defining seasons.

The day’s activities concluded at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, with “An Evening with the Veterans,” where senior journalists reflected on the evolution of the profession in Akwa Ibom State, sharing experiences that underscored the resilience and transformation of the local media landscape.

The Press Week celebration continues tomorrow, 1st December, 2025, with the official opening ceremony by the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, with London-based journalist, Mr Moffat Ekoriko as the keynote speaker.
