MMI Calls For Probe Into Death Of AKSU Ex-SUG President, NYSC Reforms

...Commends Gov. Eno Compassionate Reaction On the Death

A foremost socio-cultural organisation, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, MMI, has commended the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for showing compassion and fatherly concern over the death of former President of the Students Union Government, SUG, of Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 18, 2026, by its International Public Relations Officer, Akparawa (Pst.) Idongesit Ikono, MMI said the Governor’s show of care is reassuring and demonstrates that the people have a leader who shares in their pains and stands with them in moments of grief.

The organisation, however, called on the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the promising youth, whose life and future were tragically cut short.

MMI urged the authorities to unravel the mystery surrounding his death and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

While extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, associates and the entire AKSU community, MMI prayed Almighty God to console, comfort and strengthen the family and all those mourning the deceased in this difficult period.

The organisation also used the tragic incident to renew its call for urgent reforms of the NYSC scheme in response to growing concerns over the safety and security of corps members, particularly in areas affected by kidnapping, insecurity and violent killings.

MMI said it aligns with calls for a review of the national service deployment policy to give greater consideration to regional security realities, including the option of allowing corps members to serve within their respective geopolitical regions where practicable, as a measure to reduce exposure to avoidable risks.

According to MMI, the safety and welfare of Nigerian youths must remain paramount, and called on the Federal Government and NYSC authorities to introduce stronger security measures, improve risk assessment before deployment, and establish effective emergency-response mechanisms to protect corps members throughout their service year.

“No young Nigerian should lose their life in the course of national service,” MMI stated, calling for decisive action to ensure that the NYSC scheme fulfils its objectives without compromising the lives and safety of the nation’s youths.
