Police Arrest Suspected Fake Doctor Over Alleged Illegal Abortion, Murder

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman.

The suspect, who parades himself as Dr Sunday Okon Akpan, operates a quasi-medical outlet – Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong Village in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, Akwa Ibom State.

The arrest of the fake medical practitioner was contained in a press release issued by DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Akwa Ibom State Police Command, on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

According to the PPRO, the police arrested the suspect following a report by a woman (name withheld) that her daughter, Blessing Sunday Etim, had gone to work at Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong Village, Ibesikpo Asutan, but did not return alive.

It was further gathered from a co-tenant that Blessing Sunday Etim’s employer, Sunday Okon Akpan, had attempted to secretly enter the deceased’s room to dump her body.

The report has it that as he (Sunday Okon Akpan) was confronted, he dropped the corpse and fled the scene, a development that caused uproar and the invitation of the Police on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

The press release read, “On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at approximately 0930 hours, a man was arrested on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman.

“The arrest followed a report made by a woman (name withheld) who stated that her daughter, Blessing Sunday Etim, had gone to work at Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village, Ibesikpo Asutan.

“According to a co-tenant, the victim’s employer, a man who identified himself as Dr Sunday Okon Akpan, attempted to secretly enter the deceased’s room to dump her body. When confronted, he dropped the corpse and fled the scene.

“Upon arrival, detectives observed a premature foetus exiting the victim’s private part. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, Sunday Okon Akpan, a resident of Afaha Offiong village in Nsit Ibom.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim died from a suspected illegal abortion performed by the accused. Further enquiries exposed that the suspect, who owns and operates the Full Life Medical Centre, is not a licensed medical doctor or a nurse but rather a community health practitioner.

“It is believed that he used the facility to perform illegal medical services and abortions. The health centre had since been found deserted.

“The body of the deceased has been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
