Police Arrest Two Suspects Over Alleged Machete Attacks On Women In Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a series of alleged machete attacks and robberies targeting women in Uyo.

The Police, in a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, said the principal suspect, Wisdom Effiong, 27, was arrested following information and reports circulated on social media.

The suspect, a native of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State and a resident of Ikot Okubo Village, Uyo Local Government Area, was linked to alleged attacks around Osongama and Four Lanes areas of Uyo.

Recovered items: machete, handbag, Tecno POP 5 Android phone, iPhone 11, Remi Android phone, and power banks.

DSP John said during investigation, the Police also arrested one Yakub Abdullah of Udi Street, Uyo, who allegedly received some of the stolen items from the machete attack suspect.

Items recovered in connection with the investigation include one machete, a woman’s handbag, one Tecno POP 5 Android phone, one iPhone 11, one Remi Android phone, and three power banks.

She further disclosed that seven women have so far identified Wisdom Effiong as the person who allegedly attacked and robbed them.

“Investigation is ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ involvement and identify other possible victims or accomplices,” the statement read.

According to the PPRO, the Police Command is appealing to anyone who may have been attacked or robbed in connection with the incidents to come forward and report to the Police Public Relations Unit, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, or the nearest Police Station.

She said the suspects, who are now cooling their feet in police custody, will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

She further added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, appreciates members of the public for providing information that led to the arrest of the suspects and urged residents to continue to promptly report suspicious activities and criminal incidents.
