The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of Senator Nelson Effiong, a former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and former Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Effiong, who is an entrepreneur and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was on Sunday night whisked away by four gunmen who were said to have stormed his liquor sit-out in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The gunmen reportedly released gunshots into the air, leading to patronizers of the business outfit scampering for safety.

Speaking with newsmen, the Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, said the command has been briefed about the incident: “The Command has received that information, and the CP (Commissioner of Police) has ordered an investigation into the matter. I believe that in no distant time we will get more information on it. But as I speak, yes, we have received that report and we are working to ensure he can be rescued.”
Macdon revealed that Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew, has ordered immediate investigation of the matter.
He assured that the Police will work assiduously to secure the safe release of the victim.
