The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the full enforcement of traffic laws across the State as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard lives, restore sanity on the roads, and significantly reduce the alarming rate of road traffic crashes caused by avoidable violations.
DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) stated in a press release on August 5, 2026, that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, has noted with concern that despite repeated public enlightenment campaigns and sustained enforcement efforts, many road users continue to violate traffic regulations with impunity.
“These violations have continued to endanger lives, damage property, and disrupt the free flow of traffic across the State.
DSP John said the Command seriously concerned over the persistent cases of one-way driving, excessive speeding, dangerous and reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of covered, concealed or defaced number plates, illegal parking, route violations by tricycles and motorcycles, overloading, disregard for traffic signs and signals, use of mobile phones while driving, and other offences that constitute grave threats to public safety.
“The Police therefore wish to notify all motorists, commercial transport operators, tricycle and motorcycle riders, fleet operators, and all other road users that the statewide traffic enforcement operation is in full force and will be sustained without interruption. Officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with all provisions of the relevant traffic laws while carrying out their duties professionally, fairly, and firmly.

“The Command wishes to make it abundantly clear that anyone found violating traffic regulations will be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law. Vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles used in the commission of traffic offences may be impounded where necessary, while offenders will face the appropriate legal sanctions.
The PPRO advised members of the public “to ensure that their vehicles are duly registered, roadworthy, and properly documented. Drivers must obey speed limits, respect traffic signs and road markings, avoid dangerous overtaking, refrain from driving against traffic, and comply with all lawful directives issued by traffic enforcement personnel.”
The Commissioner of Police further emphasized that the objective of the ongoing enforcement is not to punish law-abiding citizens but to protect lives, prevent needless deaths and injuries, maintain order on the highways, and promote a culture of responsible road use throughout Akwa Ibom State.
“The Command appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers by obeying traffic regulations and reporting reckless or dangerous driving to the nearest Police Station or other security agencies. Collective adherence to traffic laws remains essential to ensuring safer roads for all.”
She added that the “Command remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property and will continue to enforce all traffic regulations professionally, impartially, and without fear or favour. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every road user has a duty to contribute to making Akwa Ibom roads safer.”
