Police Deny N25,000 Transit Fee For Officers Returning From Counter-Insurgency Deployment, Orders Probe

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has denied allegations that officers returning from a counter-insurgency deployment were asked to pay N25,000 each as transit fee.

The reaction follows a publication by SaharaReporters alleging that officers deployed to Jaji were made to pay the said amount on their return to Uyo.

In a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, on Monday, October 5, 2026, said transportation of officers from Uyo to Jaji and back is borne by the Squadron and not by individual officers.

“There is no authorised N25,000 transit fee, and officers are not required to fund their official transportation,” she clarified.

DSP John said the Command takes any allegation of unauthorised demand or collection seriously, adding that an inquiry has been ordered to establish what occurred and identify anyone responsible.

“Any personnel found to have demanded or collected money without authority will face appropriate disciplinary action and, where warranted, prosecution,” DSP John stated.

She said the Command has called on any officer with direct knowledge of any payment demand or collection to provide relevant details through appropriate channels, noting that the investigation will be guided by evidence and conducted fairly.

She urged the public to treat the reported allegation as a matter requiring verification while facts are being established.
