Police Nab Village Head Over Attempted Murder In Abak

The village of Ibagwa in Abak Local Government Area has been thrown into a state of disquiet following the arrest of the village head by the police for attempted murder.

According to the report, the village head, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, allegedly shot a woman, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang, 32 years old, in the head with a gun.

DSP Timfon John (PPRO), Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, stated this in a press release issued in Uyo on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The PPRO said the arrest of the village head followed a report filed by a brother of the village head, who alleged that he (Chief Friday Jonah Umoren), armed with a gun, shot a woman, also said to be their sister, on the head.

Operatives of the State Police Command, following the report on September 6, 2025, at approximately 2:30 pm, were detailed to the scene, where the suspect, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, was arrested and taken into custody.

Also, a long, single-barrelled gun believed to have been used in the assault by the village head was recovered from his possession.

The PPRO said the operatives equally took the victim immediately to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

She stated that police preliminary investigations suggest the incident was a result of a misunderstanding over palm fruits.

Part of the press release read, “On September 6, 2025, at approximately 2:30 PM, Operatives of the Command received a report of an attempted murder.

According to the report filed by a man (name withheld), his brother, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, the village head of Ibagwa, allegedly shot their sister, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang, 32 years old, in the head with a gun.

“The victim was immediately taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

“Police responded to the scene, and the suspect, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, was arrested and taken into custody. A long, single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the assault was recovered from his possession.”
