Renowned University Teacher, Prof Urua To Mark 65th Birthday With Book Launch, Monday

An internationally renowned scholar with the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State, Professor Eno-Abasi Urua will mark her 65th birthday, on May 30, 2022, with the theme, “Celebrating Exceeding Grace.”

The event, scheduled to hold at Helema Events Centre, Mutual Alliance Estate, Aka Itiam Street, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State by 1.00 pm will also feature the presentation of a book titled, “Current Issues in Descriptive Linguistics and Digital Humanities.”

The fascinating book, which is edited by Dr Moses Effiong Ekpenyong and Prof Imelda Icheji Udoh, is a festschrift in honour of Professor Urua, whose academic exploits have spanned the globe.

A press release by the planning committee, says that the Chief Host of the birthday and book presentation ceremony, is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo while the Chairman of the occasion is the Executive Chairman, Akwa Ibom Roads and Other Infrastructures Maintenance Agency (AKROIMA) Akparawa (Prince) Godwin Ntuk Udeh, PhD.

The Deputy Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Felicia Bassey, will serve as a Special Guest while the Host of the event is Professor Joseph Ushie, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, UNIUYO with Dr Willie Udo Willie, Acting Head of the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, UNIUYO as convener.

Prof Urua obtained a B.A. Education (English) from the University of Calabar, 1980, M.A. (Linguistics) in 1987 and PhD (Linguistics) in 1990 both from the University of Ibadan.

She also attended the University College, London, England, UK; 1997, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, 1993 – 1994 and the Universitaet Bielefeld, Germany: 2000 – 2001.

Prof Urua, who is of the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, is a distinguished Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (FNAL) and a Fellow of the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (FLAN).

She joined the University of Uyo as Lecturer II in 1992 and rose through the ranks and was appointed Professor in 2002 and has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses and has also supervised MA and PhD students in Linguistics, Language Documentation and Speech Technology.

She is a member of several professional bodies which includes the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), West African Linguistic Association (WALS), Ibibio Language Writers’ Association (ILWA), English Language Teachers’ Association (ELTA), Association of Nigerian Language Teachers (ANLAT), Royal African Society (RSA), Advisory Committee, Co-Lang 2012 at University of Kansas, USA, Committee, Poznań Studies in Contemporary Linguistics, Poland, Editorial Board, Journal of African Languages and Linguistics (JALL), Leiden and Comite International Permanent des Linguistes (representing Africa).
