Rivers State Dedicates Hotlines On Sexual Abuse, Gender Crimes
The Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation in response to the increasing and alarming statistics of sexual and gender-based violence has set up hotlines and collaborations to fast-track immediate response to victims of sexual abuse and other forms of violence.
A statement by Mrs. Inime Aguma, commissioner for social welfare and rehabilitation, said issues of rape and gender- based offenses are on the top priority list of the government.
According to her, the ministry is working in collaboration with other organizations to provide counseling, medical, psychological and legal aid as well as prosecution of offenders.
He listed those who are in collaboration with the ministry to call “Doctors without Borders (MSF) with the phone lines: 0903 355 5455 and 0705 889 0060; International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) with the phone line: 0803 706 6670 and Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Dedicated Lines: 0704 041 0523 and 0704 041 0081.
The commissioner urged members of the public to report gender-based violence, sexual abuse, domestic violence and other forms of violence.
“Let’s end the culture of silence and ensure our fundamental right to dignity,” she said.
