“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it is what difference we have made to the lives of others.”
— Nelson Mandela
As the current local government administration marks two years in office on October 7, 2026, attention naturally turns to the impact of governance at the grassroots level. In Uyo Local Government Area, the administration of Dr. Uwemedimo Udo has sought to distinguish itself through a combination of infrastructure development, economic empowerment, educational support, healthcare interventions, and community-centred governance.
Guided by the philosophy of “Service Alone Reloaded”, the administration has pursued projects aimed at addressing immediate community needs while laying the foundation for sustainable development across communities in the Etoi, Oku, Offot, and Ikono clans of Uyo Local Government Area.

A TENURE OF PROJECT DELIVERY
Perhaps the most defining feature of Dr Uwemedimo Udo’s administration has been its emphasis on project execution.
This was brought into sharp focus in 2026 when the council embarked on a one-week project handover exercise across communities in Uyo Local Government Area. The exercise showcased completed projects designed to respond directly to needs identified by host communities.
Among the projects handed over were the renovated Obo Ediene Community Market and a 12,400-litre solar-powered water scheme in Ikot Akpan Ediene. The projects were aimed at boosting local commerce, improving access to potable water, and enhancing the quality of life of residents.
For the market women, the upgraded facility represents a safer and more conducive trading environment, while the water scheme addresses a longstanding need for a clean and reliable water supply.
The beneficiaries described the interventions as timely, noting that access to potable water and improved trading infrastructure would positively affect livelihoods and public health. Community leaders pledged to protect the facilities, underscoring the growing sense of ownership that accompanied each handover.

The administration also delivered Compassionate Homes across the local government area, providing decent and secure accommodation for vulnerable residents and families in need. The initiative reflects the council’s commitment to extending development beyond public infrastructure to the dignity, welfare, and social protection of individuals and households, as inspired by the humanitarian philosophy embedded in the ARISE Agenda of Akwa Ibom State Governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD.
According to Dr Udo, the beneficiaries of the compassionate homes emerged through a deliberate assessment aimed at identifying vulnerable residents deserving of government intervention. He maintained that development should never be restricted by geography or status, stressing that every community in Uyo deserves access to the dividends of democracy.
The emotional response from the beneficiaries and community members highlighted the human dimension of governance, where public policy translates into restored dignity and renewed hope for vulnerable families.
The handover programme reflected a broader governance philosophy that places community participation at the centre of development planning, ensuring that projects respond to real needs rather than assumptions.

LIGHTING UP COMMUNITIES THROUGH THE #PROJECTLIGHTUPUYO INITIATIVE
One of the most visible aspects of Dr Uwemedimo Udo’s administration is the ambitious rural electrification programme through the #ProjectLightUpUyo initiative. Over the last two years, several communities have benefited from the installation and handover of power substations aimed at improving electricity supply and stimulating economic activities.
Communities such as Obio Etoi, Anua Obio, Ifa Ikot Uboh, Nung Uyo Idoro, Mbiabong Ikot Akpan, Ikot Obio Mkpong Ikono, Nung Mkpe Offot, Nung Udoe Ediene, Ikot Akpan Oku, Nung Edong Ediene, Eniong Offot and Ifa Ikot Okpon Etoi have witnessed improved access to electricity through the provision of 500 kVA substations and related power infrastructure. In Nung Asang Ikono, public electricity supply was restored following the installation of electricity poles across the community.
These interventions have enhanced commercial activities, supported small businesses, and enhanced living conditions for residents who previously relied heavily on generators and other alternative energy sources.
The administration has consistently maintained that access to electricity remains critical to local economic growth, and this belief has translated into practical investments across communities that had endured years of unstable power supply.

EMPOWERING BUSINESSES, STIMULATING THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Perhaps one of the most ambitious economic interventions by any local government in recent years was the disbursement of ₦100 million in business grants to 162 indigenous entrepreneurs and small business owners across Uyo Local Government Area in June 2025. The grants, distributed across different categories, provided much-needed capital support to traders, artisans, startups, and small-scale enterprises.
The initiative represented one of the largest direct economic empowerment programmes undertaken by a local government in Akwa Ibom State and was aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic resilience. Beneficiaries received grants ranging from ₦250,000 to ₦2 million, helping many expand existing businesses and improve productivity.
For beneficiaries like Ms Udeme Ekpe, a young fashion designer in Uyo, the grant was a turning point in her business.
The administration also facilitated youth training programmes in entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and vocational skills at the Dakkada Skill Acquisition Centre (DASAC) as part of efforts to build sustainable economic opportunities beyond financial grants.
The empowerment programme reinforced the administration’s belief that sustainable development is not only about physical infrastructure but also about investing directly in people.
INVESTING IN EDUCATION AND HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT
Recognising education as a key driver of development, Dr Uwemedimo Udo’s administration has sustained and expanded educational support programmes.
Over the past two years, hundreds of students of Uyo extraction have benefited from bursary payments and other grants aimed at easing the financial burden of tertiary education. In addition, the administration sponsored JAMB registration for hundreds of prospective candidates and continued support for educational advancement initiatives across the local government.
The administration also instituted an annual ₦500,000 award for the Best Graduating Student in Chemistry at the University of Uyo, a gesture designed to encourage academic excellence and reward hard work among students.
These interventions reflect a broader commitment to human capital development and the belief that empowering young people remains one of the most enduring investments governments can make.
The administration’s commitment to education has extended beyond bursaries and academic support. In September 2026, the wife of the Executive Chairman, Mrs Akaninyene Uwemedimo, organised a Back-to-School Outreach that provided school bags, exercise books, writing materials, and other educational essentials to about 200 pupils drawn from public primary schools across the four clans of Uyo Local Government Area. The initiative, which is part of the yearly programmes of the administration, was aimed at easing the burden on parents and encouraging school attendance among children from vulnerable backgrounds.
IMPROVING HEALTHCARE DELIVERY AT THE GRASSROOTS
Healthcare has remained a major priority of the administration. Over the years, the council has undertaken the renovation and upgrading of healthcare facilities while supporting primary healthcare services across communities.
The administration supported health awareness programmes such as the Ibom Open Maternity (IOM) Medical Mission, immunisation campaigns, and community-based public health initiatives implemented in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders.
The council also undertook interventions aimed at improving sanitation and access to clean water in healthcare environments, including support for potable water facilities serving primary healthcare centres within the local government area.
Through these efforts, the administration contributed to strengthening preventive healthcare and improving community health outcomes while supporting broader state and national health initiatives.
These interventions reflect the administration’s commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible to residents regardless of their location.
AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY
Although agriculture is largely driven at the state level, the administration actively aligned itself with programmes designed to enhance agricultural productivity and food security through initiatives such as the Council’s farm in Nung Asang Ikono, Uyo.
As Chairman of ALGON and Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo publicly supported the state’s Tree Crop Revolution initiative, which seeks to expand oil palm cultivation through the distribution of improved high-yield seedlings to farmers. The initiative is expected to contribute to wealth creation, food security, and rural economic development.
The administration also supported community-based agricultural initiatives and environmental sustainability efforts, including endorsement of the One Million Economic Trees Planting Campaign aimed at promoting greener communities, environmental conservation, and future agricultural productivity.
These efforts align with a broader vision of sustainable development that recognises agriculture as an important driver of economic growth and rural prosperity.
INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Infrastructure development has remained a visible component of the Service Alone administration’s activities.
In June 2025, the council commissioned the fully remodelled Uyo City Motor Park at Mbiabong Etoi, transforming what had become a deteriorating facility into a modern transport hub designed to improve traffic management, enhance commuter experience, and support commercial activities.
Speaking during the commissioning of the motor park and its facilities, Dr Uwemedimo Udo explained that the dilapidated condition of the former facility had encouraged touts to operate from the roadside.
“Here was flooded, which stopped motorists and commuters from accessing the park. This project is like opening up the ground and burying money, but I had promised myself that if there was an opportunity for me, I would reactivate the park and, to the glory of God, we have been able to provide an asphalted access road with side drains to take out water whenever it rains,” he said.
The administration also remodelled and furnished offices at the Uyo Traditional Rulers Council Complex, reaffirming its commitment to preserving and strengthening traditional institutions as partners in grassroots governance.
Across the local government area, road grading and rehabilitation projects improved accessibility in rural communities. The provision of boreholes and solar-powered water facilities in several communities, including the University of Uyo Community, has further improved access to potable water and addressed longstanding needs, while environmental improvements have addressed community concerns.
SOCIAL WELFARE AND PEOPLE-CENTRED GOVERNANCE
In line with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, PhD, the administration has, beyond physical infrastructure, embraced social intervention programmes targeted at vulnerable members of society.
The construction and provision of about six compassionate homes across the LGA stand out as a significant people-centred intervention. The fully furnished two-bedroom Compassionate Homes programme stands out as a significant people-centred intervention. Three homes have already been completed and handed over in Nsukara Offot, Uyo Oku, and Nung Erong Ediene, while three others are under construction in Nung Asang Ikono, Ikot Akpan Oku, and Ikot Okubo Offot. This initiative has offered shelter, comfort, and renewed hope to vulnerable residents, demonstrating that the administration’s development agenda includes not only roads, markets, and public facilities, but also the well-being and dignity of the people.
The council’s development strategy has consistently emphasised direct interaction with communities, traditional rulers, youth groups, women’s organisations, and other stakeholders to ensure that government interventions align with community priorities.
This participatory approach has contributed significantly to the acceptance and sustainability of projects executed across the local government area.
SPORTS AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Sports development emerged as another important area of focus during the period under review.
The administration consistently supported Team Uyo’s participation in state sporting competitions and recognised sports as a platform for youth engagement, talent discovery, and social inclusion.
The influence of the administration has extended beyond Uyo Local Government Area. Shortly after his inauguration in October 2024, Dr Uwemedimo Udo emerged Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, giving Uyo a louder voice in inter-local government collaboration. His cordial working relationship with the State Governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD, facilitated stronger alignment between local and state development agendas, ensuring that Uyo remained a model in the Governor’s ARISE Agenda.
THE ROAD AHEAD
As the administration of Dr Uwemedimo Udo marks two years in office, its scorecard reflects a deliberate effort to combine infrastructure development with human capital investment, economic empowerment, and community-focused governance.
From #ProjectLightUpUyo and healthcare interventions to educational support, business grants, Compassionate Homes, community water schemes, and infrastructure renewal, the administration has sought to translate government resources into measurable improvements in the lives of residents.
While development remains a continuous process, the past two years have produced visible evidence of an administration determined to leave a lasting impact on communities across Uyo Local Government Area.
For many residents, the story of the last two years can be summarised in one phrase: a sustained effort to bring governance closer to the people and ensure that development is not merely promised, but delivered, as captured in the administration’s guiding philosophy — Service Alone Reloaded.
