AKHA Speaker Charges National Assembly Commission To Recruit On Merit
The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has charged members of the National Assembly Service Commission to ensure the sustenance of the principles of fairness in her recruitment processes.
The Speaker gave the charge at the opening of a four-day retreat for senior staff and management of the National Assembly Service Commission this week.
According to him, “Let me recommend that in the application of the Public Service Rules of the National Assembly Service Commission and all other extant regulations, the Commission should be guided by the principles of natural justice, equity and fair play. Federal character principle should also be the guide on all appointments to ensure geographical spread and satisfaction of the minority groups in the country.”
As part of his keynote address as well as the special guest of honour at the event, Hon. Aniekan Bassey thanked the Commission for choosing the state as their destination for the retreat which is not far-fetched from the truth that Akwa Ibom is a peaceful and serene state.
Earlier in his remark, the Executive Chairman of National Assembly Service Commission, Engr. Ahmed Kadi Amshi, said the retreat of commissioners and management in Uyo will afford the Commission opportunity to address issues which will add value and progress to the body and its members.
He commended the serene and peaceful nature of the state which informed the choice of the Commission to make it the host for the year’s retreat.

“I am sure Uyo is equally fascinating to the management staff of the Commission, hence the choice of the city for the retreat. The serene nature and good security network are additional factors that influenced the choice.”
In his remark, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Assembly Service Commission, Arch Bishop Andrew Uwanta, said the title of the retreat, “Agenda Setting as a Roadmap” for the 5th National Assembly Service is not accidental but timely.
He said that Akwa Ibom State is one of the earliest states to establish a State Assembly Service Commission in Nigeria as far back as February 5, 2001. Also, Akwa Ibom was the first state to host the Joint National Conference of the National Assembly Service Commission.
In her goodwill message, the Clerk of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mrs Mandu Umoren, welcomed members of the Commission and wished them a safe stay in the state as they enjoy the numerous cuisines and her serene natural environment.
