The Director-General of the Akwa Ibom State Fiscal Responsibility Board, Mr Victor Edet, has again been honoured for excellence in public service.

Mr Edet, who is also the National Chairman of the Forum of Heads and Accounting Officers of Fiscal Responsibility Agencies in Nigeria, was honoured as “Outstanding Public Servant of the Year 2026” during the Akwa Ibom State 2026 Public Service Week Award of Excellence.

The award was presented by the Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, in recognition of his exceptional dedication, outstanding performance and exemplary service to the Akwa Ibom State Public Service.

This latest honour adds to a long list of recognitions that have trailed Mr. Edet’s career in recent years.

It would be recalled that the foremost socio-cultural organisation, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, had honoured him as the “Best Performing Chapter Chairman in Nigeria for 2025” – an award he also won in 2024 as Chairman of the Uyo Chapter. His professional body, the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (ICEN), also recently conferred on him the Fellowship of the Institute (FCE) at its General Conference in Abuja.

His previous public service awards include the Outstanding Public Service Award with a cash grant of N1,000,000 presented by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2025), Best Performing Head of Fiscal Responsibility Agencies in Nigeria (2024), and Overall Best Staff in the Ministry of Economic Development Public Service Rules Examination (2014), among others.

Mr Edet’s career, which rose from Planning Officer II to Director of Planning and now Director-General since June 29, 2021, has been marked by far-reaching fiscal reforms that have delivered measurable value to Akwa Ibom State.

As Secretary of the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) Programme Steering Committee, he led the Secretariat that qualified the State to access over N15.592 billion in World Bank performance-based grants, with an additional N2.536 billion.

As Secretary of the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER), he also coordinates reforms that qualified the State for $3.585 million and recently $6.2 million in 2026 in World Bank funding.

Other landmark achievements under his watch include the development and institutionalisation of the Akwa Ibom State Standard Budget Calendar and Budget Process Manual for both State and Local Governments, spearheading the adoption of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) across Local Government Councils, and initiating the full implementation of Treasury Single Account (TSA).

The TSA reform, supported by the Commissioner for Finance and approved by the Governor, has yielded immediate results, with Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the first three months of 2026 rising to N23.58 billion compared to N16.30 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.

He also introduced climate-responsive budgeting and nutrition budget tagging, institutionalised payment of political appointees from their respective MDAs, and coordinated the amendment of the State Public Procurement Law and Fiscal Responsibility Law, which have been passed by the House of Assembly and assented to by the Governor.

Mr Edet, an indigene of Ifa Ikot Okpon, Etoi Clan in Uyo LGA, is an accomplished economist, Fellow of ICEN, Member of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), and alumnus of the University of Uyo, WAIFEM, and the International Training Centre of ILO, Turin, Italy.

He currently serves as Coordinator of the MTEF Technical Committee, Secretary of the State Budget Committee, Secretary of the SABER Steering Committee, and Secretary of the State Budget Harmonisation Committee.

The Head of Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, has been commended for sustaining the Public Service Week Awards to motivate excellence in the civil service.
