Journalists have been urged to look beyond newsroom salaries and embrace entrepreneurship as a pathway to financial independence, long-term security and sustainable wealth creation.
Mr Ogechukwu Udeagha, General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited, made the call during a two-day Seplat Media Partners Programme on Career and Capacity Development organised by Eloh Consulting Limited at CEEDAPEG Hotels, Uyo.
Speaking on wealth creation for media professionals, Udeagha challenged journalists to move beyond reporting the success stories of entrepreneurs and begin building sustainable wealth of their own.

He noted that changing economic realities and the evolving media landscape made income diversification essential, urging practitioners to leverage their knowledge, professional networks, creativity and storytelling skills to explore business opportunities.
According to him, journalists can generate additional income through media consultancy, public relations, corporate communications, digital content creation, podcast production, social media management, event management and professional training without abandoning their careers.

Udeagha also stressed the importance of financial planning, encouraging journalists to consider their economic needs five, ten, twenty and thirty-five years ahead.

“Will what you are doing today cater for you and your family at retirement?” he asked, emphasising that wealth creation requires the right mindset, effective resource management, opportunity recognition and deliberate action.
He urged participants to remain open to new ideas, unlearn outdated practices and develop practical strategies for improving their financial well-being.
His central message:
“Journalists must move beyond reporting wealth to actively creating it.”
