Besides, it has revealed plans to immortalise Akpagu. The association made this known in Calabar when its executive committee paid a courtesy visit on the vice-chancellor to present him with an award of “Credence of Selfless Service” for his outstanding performances and exceptional commitment to students’ welfare.
Speaking, the state chairman of the association, Comrade Mbang Confidence, assured Professor Akpagu that students across the state will always support his ambition to represent Cross River North in the Senate in the pending by-election.
Mbang said, “Akpagu’s “reign as vice-chancellor is a great blessing to the students’ community and youths of Cross River as he has positively influenced and patronised them.
“He restructured the institution and gave it an international face. We bid him farewell and would queue behind as he campaigns for his senatorial race. We also urge the public to judge him by his antecedents. As he stood for the students, so shall we stand with him.”
While extolling him, he said, “As one of the influential patrons of NANS and most outstanding vice-chancellor in the South-South geopolitical zone, we deem it fit to immortalise him by building the first-ever NANS secretariat in Nigeria to be named “Prof. Zana Akpagu NANS Secretariat” in the University of Calabar”.
Reacting, Prof. Akpagu expressed gratitude to the students’ body for finding him worthy to be so-honoured and their support for his senatorial ambition.

Pledging that he will always be for the students even after leaving office, Akpagu said, “When I see you like this, I think of my days as a student. I have a very serious attachment with the students, maybe because I am the first alumnus to become vice-chancellor. My idea to expand our curriculum offerings is to allow more people to become our students.
“Although, we may not have done all we wanted for the students, so far, we have done our best to raise the standard of their welfare. I thank you for the award; I won’t take it for granted.
“I also assure you that my senatorial ambition is just to look for a greater platform to serve the people. For us, it’s all about quality service; something my senatorial district has not been fortunate to enjoy.”
