Artificial Intelligence is reshaping modern journalism, creating new opportunities to improve news gathering, content production, editorial accuracy and audience engagement.
Veteran broadcaster, Mr. Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, stated this during the two-day Seplat Media Partners Programme on Career and Capacity Development on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The programme was organised by Eloh Consulting Limited at CEEDAPEG Hotels, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking on the role of AI in the modern newsroom, Uwaemelulam identified five key areas where the technology is transforming journalism — news gathering, content production, editing and fact-checking, news distribution and audience engagement.

He explained that AI enhances journalists’ writing skills, identifies emerging trends, gathers information from digital sources and generates story ideas, while also assisting in drafting reports, summarising content and creating headlines.
On editing and fact-checking, he noted that AI-powered tools help improve grammar, sentence structure and readability, detect inconsistencies, identify plagiarism and support verification of facts, figures and claims.

He added that AI improves news distribution through Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), headline testing and personalised content recommendations, helping media organisations expand their reach and connect with wider audiences.

According to him, chatbots and other AI-driven platforms also boost audience engagement by responding to enquiries, providing timely information and recommending content based on readers’ interests.
Uwaemelulam, however, emphasised that while AI offers significant benefits in efficiency, speed and productivity, it should complement and not replace journalists’ professional judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility.
He urged media practitioners to embrace technological innovation, acquire relevant digital skills and adapt to emerging trends to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving media landscape.

He stressed that accuracy, credibility, accountability and responsible journalism must remain the guiding principles of news production, regardless of the technological tools employed.
