A’Ibom Speaker Directs Works Committee To Visit Collapsed Bridges In Ikono

by Nelson Enyieting

The speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has referred a motion on two collapsed bridges in Ikono Local Government Area to the House Committee on Works and Transport for an on-the-spot assessment, evaluation and recommendation and to report to the House within two weeks.

The speaker gave the directive at plenary when Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo, member for Ikono State Constituency, raised a motion over the two collapsed bridges entitled “Collapsed Bridges in Ikono State Constituency: Urgent Call for Government Intervention.”

Giving an insight into the motion, the Ikono lawmaker described the collapsed bridges, Nkwot Ikot Nseyen – Nung Ukim Bridge and Iton Ikot Ito – Iton Mmong Bridge as important to the people living in those communities.

He lamented that the two bridges have rendered the people of his constituency hopeless and stranded owing to the fact that 16 villages make use of those bridges on a daily basis.

Hon. Udo also expressed the worry that the collapsed bridges have not only tampered with free and easy transportation of traders and other people, but have also led to the hike in prices of foodstuffs since it has become extremely difficult for marketers who travel long distances to convey goods to the area.

He listed the affected 16 villages to include Nkwot Ikot Akpa Isiak, Ikot Ette, Ikot Umoessien, Nkwot Nko, Ikot Enie, Ikot Okpo, Ikot Nseyen, Nung Imo, Ikot Idomo, Ikot Obio Ata, Ikot Udo, Obio Ediene, Etip Ediene, Iton Ikot Ito, Iton Mmong and Nnung Ukim.

He therefore prayed the House to urge the state government to direct relevant agencies of government to intervene by taking steps to reconstruct the two collapsed bridges.

The motion which was seconded by Hon Godwin Ekpo, member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, was referred to the House Committee on Works and Transport to report back in two weeks.
