Media Entrepreneurship: Expert Urge Journalists to Turn Skills into Wealth

By Edna Monye

Journalists have been urged to embrace media entrepreneurship by turning their professional skills, networks and digital platforms into sustainable income streams.

The call was made by media professional and trainer Mr Nnamdi Uwaemelulam during a media entrepreneurship training session designed to help journalists explore business opportunities beyond traditional newsroom employment at CEEDAPEG Hotels, Uyo, on Monday.

Uwaemelulam said entrepreneurship begins with a mindset shift, urging journalists to recognise the commercial value of their writing, communication, research and storytelling skills.

He noted that the changing media landscape, driven by digital technology and evolving audience habits, has created new opportunities for journalists to build personal brands, create content and monetise their expertise.

He encouraged participants to explore video production, mobile journalism, product reviews, social media management and digital storytelling as viable ventures, while leveraging their professional networks to secure paid assignments and collaborations with local and international media organisations.

He advised journalists to identify their strengths, interests and marketable skills, understand client needs and build practical business models around their expertise.

According to him, journalists do not need to abandon the profession to attain financial independence but can build sustainable businesses by combining experience with digital innovation, strategic partnerships and entrepreneurial thinking.

Speakers at the training also challenged media practitioners to move beyond conventional reporting and evolve into content creators, digital communicators and entrepreneurs capable of adapting to industry changes and creating lasting economic value.
