Rape: Akon Eyakenyi Wants Stiffer Punishment For Culprits
The senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, has advocated for stiffer punishment for anyone convicted of rape in Nigeria.
Dr. Eyakenyi made the call while contributing to a debate on the prevalent cases of rape, on the floor of the Senate.
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, we are all aware that this particular issue (of rape) has been raised in this hallowed chambers and we have spoken strongly against it.
“It is so rampant across Nigeria that men who are supposed to be fathers, who are supposed to be brothers, will see a little child and will violate such a child. A father will violate his own daughter and a brother will violate a sister.

“We have a case like that also in Akwa Ibom State that we are handling right now where a father violated his little daughter.
“Mr. President, just like my sister has said, it is not just arresting the culprits, taking them to the police station and probably taking them to court and secure few years of jail term for them.
“That is not enough! We did raise it here some months ago that a severe penalty should be given to such a culprit.
“I strongly join other people to speak against this deadly act because it is destroying our children, our daughters, who are supposed to be our leaders of tomorrow,” Akon Eyakenyi said.
