AKHA Resolves To Extend TC Chairmen Tenure After Assessing Performance

By Mercy Obot

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has mandated its Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to assess the performances of the Transition Committee Chairmen across the 31 local government areas in the state to enable the house to extend its tenure.

This decision was in response to the message forwarded to the house by Governor Umo Eno to the 8th Assembly requesting the extension of the Local Government Transition Committees at Thursday’s plenary, May 9, 2024.

The letter, which was read by the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, was received through a motion by the member representing Ikono State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo, and seconded by the member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung.

According to the state governor, the tenure extension became necessary when the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission conducted a local government election.

Recall that the governor had requested that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly pass a resolution to extend the tenure of the Transition Committees in the 31 local government areas (LGAs) to provide the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) with sufficient time to prepare for the upcoming local government elections in the state.

In his ruling, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, stated that it would be necessary for the House to first inspect the activities of the local government councils since there are currently no elected councillors to perform this function before the request is granted.
