House Of Reps. Adopts Ime Okon’s Petition On Rural Transformer Supply Failures

...To Probe Defaulting Private Companies

The Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ime Bassey Okon, has urged the Nigerian House of Representatives to investigate private companies contracted to supply transformers to local communities.

Presenting a petition submitted by the Nwut Usiong Village Council before the House during plenary on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the federal lawmaker called for an investigation into the matter in the interest of the affected constituents.

According to the petition titled “RE: Award of Contract for the Supply and Installation of 10 Nos. 300KVA Transformers in Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State (Category N5)”, the village council lamented the prolonged blackout in the community resulting from the non-delivery of a transformer allocated to it as one of the beneficiaries of the project.

The petition, signed by Hon. Otobong Ekong, Chairman of Nwut Usiong Village Council, further revealed that out of the 10 beneficiary communities, only six had received transformers from the contractor, Jamokwet Investment Limited, while the remaining four communities were still awaiting delivery.

The communities that received transformers include Mbak Obio Itam, Mbribit Itam, Ntiat Itam, Ikot Ukobo Ibiono, Afaha Ikot Idaha Ibiono, and Ibiaku Ibiono. The remaining four communities, Nwut Usiong Itam, Mbiaobong Itam, Ikot Ekwo Idoro, and Awat Nkang, were promised delivery at a later date.

“After waiting for years and after efforts to get the contractor back to site failed, other affected constituents and I wrote a letter dated March 19, 2025, to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, now the Ministry of Regional Affairs, requesting that the four remaining transformers allocated to our communities be supplied. We also approached the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Regional Affairs, who promised to look into our request.

“My community has continued to suffer total blackout due to the inability and refusal of Jamokwet Investment Limited to execute the contract after many years, as well as the inability of the Ministry of Regional Affairs to compel the contractor to complete the project, thereby making life unbearable for the indigenes and residents of Nwut Usiong community,” Hon. Otobong Ekong stated in the petition.

Hon. Ime Okon urged the House to consider the petition and ensure that the contractor fulfils the terms of the contract, noting that communities across the country continue to face challenges arising from the non-performance of contractual obligations by contractors.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, directed the House Committee on Public Petitions to investigate the matter and report back to the House with recommendations for further legislative action.
