Ahead of the commencement of the new NPFL season, two-time Federation cup champions Akwa United warmed up nicely with a 1-0 victory over Rivers United in a pre-season friendly decided at the football pitch of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly complex on Sunday afternoon.
Paul Obata’s well taken free-kick in the 17th minute proved decisive as the Promise Keepers recorded a morale boosting win as they continue to prepare for the new NPFL season scheduled to kickoff early next month.
Akwa United and the Pride of Rivers lined up strong squad for the Grade A friendly and fans who turned out in their numbers to watch the game were not disappointed in any way.
The Promise Keepers first real chance of the game went the way of
midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi whose left-footed strike narrowly missed the target. But it was Paul Obata spectacular free-kick in the 17th minute that sealed the win for the Akwa United.
The Promise Keepers have played series of pre-season friendlies including a 1-1 draw with Dakkada FC, a goalless draw with J. Atete as part of their preparations for the new NPFL season.
The Uyo based side will kick start their 2019/2020 campaign aginst Warri Wolves on Sunday 3rd November, 2019.
