Rotary Club Rescues A’Ibom Community with Potable Drinking Water

As part of activities to mark its 2023 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project, the Rotary Club of Uyo Shelter Afrique has extended its succour to the Nung Ette community in Ibesikpo Asutan with the provision of a giant borehole to supply the community with clean drinking water.

The Club extended the gesture to its host community in partnership with its Club Ambassador Engr. Edo Etuk, the Managing Director of Akwa Ibom State Water Company Ltd., and made tremendous contributions to the project’s success.

Rotary Club provides potable water in Nung Ette

Addressing elated leaders and indigenes of the benefiting community, the President of Rotary Club Shelter Afrique, Rotn. Chibuzo Iroadu explained that Rotary International have categorized Club Projects based on seven Areas of Focus namely: Basic Education and Literacy; Maternal and Child Health; Disease Prevention and Control; Water and Sanitation and Hygiene; Peace and Conflict Resolution; Economic and Community Development.

According to her, “The month is marked as a month where Rotarians celebrate their commitment to create healthier communities, by supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases”.

She further highlighted, “Clean water is a basic human right that many are often denied. According to research, there are 2.5 billion people in the world that lack access to improved sanitation facilities and 748 million people that don’t have clean drinking water. Nearly 1400 children die each day from diseases caused by lack of sanitation and unsafe water. When people have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives.

“It is on this premise, that Rotary Club of Uyo, Shelter Afrique in partnership with Engr. Edo Etuk, the Managing Director of Akwa lbom State Water Company Ltd are committed to providing equitable access to clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene to the Nung Ette Community.

The club president, who acknowledged that the Rotary is about selfless services to promote integrity, empathy, and friendship to advance world understanding that enhances development among the citizens of our communities and the community at large, appealed to the youth of Nung Ette community to form a Rotary Community Corp that will provide a suitable interface with Rotary for future development.

Also speaking at the event, the Club Ambassador Engr. Edo Etuk, the Managing Director of Akwa lbom State Water Company Ltd., said he was motivated to partner with the Rotary Club because of its unrelenting desire to promote a better society and lessen the burden of hardship in the communities, stressing that the incumbent leadership of the club is very focused and has achieved so much.

In the same vein, the Governor-elect of the Rotary Club District 914, Mr Akan Emah, extolled the sterling leadership qualities of Rotarian Chibuzo Iroadu’s administration and called for more support and assistance for her to do more for humanity through the Rotary platform.

“We are very proud of your achievements and various milestones, it is on record that the Rotary Club Shelter Afrique under your leadership has outperformed others in terms of services and we are encouraging you to sustain the tempo”.

Leaders and members of the community who spoke with Journalists after the official handing over of the project to the community expressed deep-seated gratitude to Rotary Club for their love and commitment to the community’s welfare over the years.

They appealed to the Rotary Club, Shelter Afrique Uyo, which operates from their community to do more to touch more lives while assuring them of continuous peace and good neighbourliness in the years ahead.
