THREE YEARS OF FOCUSED, PEOPLE-CENTERED REPRESENTATION: THE EKONG SAMPSON EXPERIENCE

By Samuel Udoma

Today, June 13, 2026, marks three years of Senator Ekong Sampson in office as Senator representing the good and enterprising people of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

This milestone isn’t just about time in the office; it is a moment to reflect on a journey of purposeful leadership, responsive representation, and visible impact across communities.

In an era of increasing demands for tangible governance outcomes rather than political rhetoric, Senator Ekong Sampson has steadily earned commendation as a legislator whose stewardship is defined by accessibility, proactiveness and developmental results.

From the floor of the Senate to grassroots communities of Akwa Ibom South, Senator Sampson’s three years in office have witnessed the prioritisation of education, healthcare, infrastructure, empowerment and sustainable human capital development. Indeed, across the twelve local government areas of the district, the footprints of Senator Sampson’s representation are visible and enduring.

At the National Assembly, Senator Sampson has emerged as one of the notable voices of the 10th Senate. His thoughts, insights and perspective often carry the weight of an experienced parliamentarian with the icing of a well-read public intellectual.

Sampson’s appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education (Basic & Secondary), and Chairman of the Akwa Ibom National Assembly Caucus underscored the confidence and respect he commands among his colleagues.

These strategic positions have not only amplified the voice of Akwa Ibom South in national policy conversations but have equally enabled it to push critical advocacies and opportunities for its constituency.

Legislatively, Senator Sampson has demonstrated sustained productivity and foresight. His sponsorship of key bills and motions reflects a deep understanding of the developmental aspirations of his people. The bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Akwa Ibom South, now set for implementation, stands out as a landmark intervention capable of redefining healthcare delivery within the district.

Equally significant are his bills to provide legal footing for the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (at Third Reading), and the proposed Federal University of Medical Sciences, Eket – another visionary move aimed at expanding educational access and positioning Akwa Ibom South as a hub for academic and technological excellence.

Sampson’s legislative advocacy also extends to national development and regional integration. He co-sponsored the South-South Development Commission Bill, which passed, was assented to, and is now in full implementation.

However, beyond sponsoring bills, motions and driving advocacies on the Senate floor, Senator Sampson has also shown deep commitment to touching lives and creating opportunities for ordinary people. This forms part of why he has placed education, healthcare and infrastructure among key areas of his legislative attention.

In a bold demonstration of his belief in the transformative power of education, Senator Sampson provided a historic ₦100 million grant to students and some teachers in Akwa Ibom South. He recently added another 10 million naira to the law school students from the district. For many students and families battling economic hardship, the interventions represented not just financial assistance but renewed hope for a better future.

Also, recognising the growing importance of technology in modern education, Senator Sampson has facilitated the construction of ICT and CBT centres across several schools, including Excellence College, Ikot Unya; St. Vincent Secondary School, Oti-Oro, Okobo; and St. Francis Secondary School, Ikot Ataku, Eket.

Some of the senator’s other interventions in the education sector include construction of staff quarters, classroom blocks, science laboratories, hostel facilities and sports infrastructure across multiple schools in the district. Ongoing projects at the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, and several other institutions further reinforce his commitment to building a firmer educational foundation for future generations.

Healthcare delivery has equally received unprecedented attention under Senator Sampson’s representation. At a time when access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge in many rural communities, Senator Ekong Sampson has demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to public health interventions.

He has constructed and handed over doctors’ call rooms at Immanuel Hospital, Eket, and General Hospital, Ikot Abasi, with other medical facilities underway at Cottage Hospital, Ibeno, and the proposed facility at General Hospital, Iquita Oron. The senator also ran a massive free medical outreach programme, which focused on eye treatment for constituents in May 2026.

Infrastructural development has also become a central part of Senator Sampson’s constituency agenda in these past three years. Through the senator’s influence and the gratuitous benevolence of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, the state government is constructing the long-desired 13.8 km Ibekwe-Ikot Unya-Ekpuk Road, which stretches through the Ikpa Ikono and Ibiaku clans in Mkpat Enin.

Senator Sampson, through the instrumentality of his constituency projects, has also facilitated the construction of the 3.3 km Nung Ukim-Ikot Umiang junction-Ikot Unya road in Mkpat Enin, alongside other connecting roads in the area. Across Akwa Ibom South, the lawmaker has opened up community roads such as the Utu-Idim Asak Ikang road in the Mbo Local Government Area and Mkpok rural roads in the Onna Local Government Area. Additionally, an ambitious erosion control project is ongoing in Ekeya, Okobo Local Government Area, courtesy of the senator.

Other critical interventions undertaken by Senator Sampson include the reactivation and extension of electricity facilities in Ikot Akpandem, Okon Eket, Eyubiasang in Urueffong Oruko, Ikot Unya-Ikot Mkpeye, and other parts of Ikpa Ikono. Several communities have also been provided with solar-powered water supply and solar lighting projects – all facilitated by the senator.

Importantly, Senator Sampson has complemented physical infrastructure with aggressive investment in human capital development and empowerment.
Within his first six months in office, he rolled out a mega empowerment programme that benefited over 1,000 constituents, particularly youths and women. Beneficiaries received business grants, educational support packages, vehicles and other empowerment items aimed at boosting livelihoods and promoting self-reliance.

Over 1,000 youths and women have equally benefited from Sampson’s training programmes in areas such as ICT, mining, media, cosmetology, paint making, barbing, hairdressing and other vocational areas.

Through his facilitation, over 60 indigenes of Akwa Ibom South and Akwa Ibom State have secured employment in federal agencies, parastatals and uniformed organisations. Some have been reinstated through his petitions and mediation.

Senator Sampson has also given quality cars to many supporters, tricycles and motorcycles to petty traders and youths to boost local enterprises. At the moment, over 100 motorcycles and assorted support items, including more vehicles, are awaiting distribution to his constituents in the next component of Senator Sampson’s empowerment programme, which will also come with business grants to constituents.

These interventions speak to the lawmaker’s leadership philosophy that true empowerment is not merely about temporary relief but about equipping people with the capacity to thrive independently.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Senator Sampson has also emerged as a leading voice in Nigeria’s drive for economic diversification. His advocacy for mining sector reforms, responsible mining practices and youth participation in the sector reflects his broader vision for economic expansion and job creation beyond oil. In his reign as committee chairman, the Solid Minerals ministry received its first-ever trillion-naira budgetary allocation to drive sector growth.

Perhaps one of the savviest attributes of Senator Ekong Sampson’s stewardship is his ability to build bridges, manage the plurality and foster collaborative relationships across a uniquely diverse Akwa Ibom South. He has ensured project spread and demonstrated, beyond lip service, his commitment to protecting the interests of every strand and segment of the senatorial district.

The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin has enjoyed a very warm relationship with the president of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio; Governor Umo Eno; his colleagues in the National Assembly; stakeholders at home; and, indeed, a rich spectrum of the people.

It is safe to say that three years after assuming office, the unanimous verdict across many communities is evident: Senator Ekong Sampson has brought visibility, substance and responsiveness to representation. From his legislative spreadsheet to constituency outreach, Sampson’s stewardship has reflected a deliberate effort in repositioning Akwa Ibom South, uplifting communities and expanding opportunities for the people.

For many across Akwa Ibom South, the journey has only just begun. The future truly beckons with great tidings.
