Experience Counts for Effective Representation at the National Assembly – Eseme Eyiboh

By Nseobong Umoidem

A former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh has harped on experience as an added advantage to attracting the dividends of democracy from the National Assembly to the people at the grassroots.

Eyiboh, who represented Eket/Onna/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011, made this known on Monday, April 20, 2026, in Uyo, while speaking to newsmen on recent political developments in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.

Eyiboh, who is currently the spokesman to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, maintained that the Electoral Act as amended has allowed Nigerian citizens to choose their leaders and explained that an opportunity to return to the National Assembly for a second term also puts the representatives at a vantage point to deliberate on issues affecting the grassroots at the National Assembly and attract the necessary developments and empowerments to their people.

He solicited support for the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Senator Ekong Sampson; and Rt Hon. Okpolupm Etteh from the people in the State and Federal Constituencies, respectively, adding that the trio have performed creditably well and, if given another opportunity, would sustain the momentum and do even more for their people.

His words: “In democracy, there shouldn’t be godfatherism because there is only one God, who is also the father. From my interrogations with Rt Hon. Okpolupm Ette and his further presentation of his scorecard to me recently, Etteh has numerous projects worth billions of naira awaiting implementation. And for a first-term National Assembly lawmaker who navigates through committees, to have achieved that is a lot. And if another person goes now, those items will be extinguished. And since I am given to social justice, I think it is Etteh’s due to go back for a second term.

“The position of Akwa Ibom in the national grid should be sustained because of the unity of purpose by Akwa Ibom representatives. If President Tinubu is going back for a second term because of his achievements, Senator Godswill Akpabio is going back because of his growth mindset, and Governor Umo Eno should return for a second term, I think Senator Ekong Sampson and Rt Hon. Okpolupm Ette should be allowed to go back.”

Eyiboh used the occasion to caution politicians against using the name of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to advance their political ambitions.
