Rotational Presidency And The South-East

The beauty of Nigeria’s democracy is the introduction of rotational presidency that oscillates between the North and South as well as rotates among the Geo-political zones.

It is a home-grown approach that is unique to Nigeria and has seemingly engendered unity, fairness while guaranteeing that all sections of the country take turns to have a shot at the highest office in the land.

So far, the arrangement has apparently won the support of Nigerians and is widely and religiously adhered to since inception.

Based on that general understanding and premise, we therefore make bold to broach the subject of the Presidency rotating to the South-East geopolitical zone.

Going by calculations, the 2023 Presidency is rightly the slot for the South-East. Period!

But there is seemingly an uneasy silence surrounding this subject even among the political class, political analysts and the media. Everyone is obviously skirting around it and some do not want to touch it with a long pole.

No matter what, it is a national issue that must be brought to the front burner and openly and thoroughly addressed for the sake of equity, justice and fairness.

Since 1999 when the present Fourth Republic was introduced, the rotational Presidency has oscillated efficiently to the pride of Nigeria and admiration of the international community. Nigeria’s democracy has been smooth sailing on the wings of rotational presidency and hopefully shall it continue to be.

Therefore, it would be absurd, inexplicable and preposterous if the rhythm and tempo of the rotation are not sustained in 2023. Given the strong faith Nigerians place in rotation and zoning of political offices, the South-East is ripe and next in line for the presidency.

From 2023 it is expected that the presidency would continue like the swinging of the pendulum between the North and South but it would have made a full rotation among the three geopolitical zones of the South and hopefully in years to come also complete a full circle in the North.

Rotational presidency has come to stay and is a unifying factor needed for the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy, unity and progress. With this arrangement that has been in place since 1999, there would be no point to derail it now.

Therefore, the South-East should gear up for the presidency in a manner that would uphold and sustain the sovereignty of Nigeria as one indivisible nation and preserve national unity and peace.

It is on record that the South-East is blessed with human resources and capacity. Its people have excelled in all walks of life and therefore the Geo-political zone is in a position to put forward a leader who will take Nigeria to yet a higher (next) level.

All the political parties should therefore zone their presidential candidacy to favour the South-East Geo-political zone in the spirit of rotation for the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.
