Senator Albert Felicitates Journalists On World Press Freedom Day

 

 

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources Upstream and senator representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan has felicitated with journalists on the occasion of the 2020 World Press Freedom Day.

 

Senator Akpan, popularly known as OBA, in a message of felicitation, used the occasion to highlight the importance of the media in the society and called for support and cooperation to journalists and media practitioners generally.

 

“Media responsibilities situate on the development of the society and for the common good of all. The global focus on Media, through the celebration of World Press Freedom Day therefore mirrors its importance within the development wheel, demanding collaborative support of all leaders of governments, institutions and the people, in line with existing statutes,” he stated.

 

The Senator urged journalists to demonstrate reciprocity by exercising “ethical mien and candor; always placing the interest and wellbeing of the society above selves, and avoiding the pursuits of unprofessional and destructive editorials.”

 

Senator Akpan hinged on the theme for the 2020 World Press Freedom Day, being “Journalism without Fear or Favour” and observed that the theme “magnifies impartially which is in sync with best ethical practices.”

 

He praised the Nigerian media for always being very active and contributing immensely in the body politics of the nation, predating our independence.

 

“Unarguably, Nigerian media have excelled in our public spheres and its contributions to our political evolution and democracy remains legendary,” he quipped.

 

While saluting journalists on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, he assured them of his continued goodwill.
